Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between closed and open cell SPF

Open Cell SPF also called 1/2 pound foam is a highly expandable (over 100 times) SPF. (1/2 pound means a cube of foam 12″x12″x12″ weighs 1/2 pound.) It is a good thermal insulation product. The R-value ranges from 3.4 to 4.2 per inch ours is 4.0. It has excellent sound absorbing qualities but is also an excellent thermal insulating product. It is considered an air sealing product but does not have the sealing properties of Closed Cell SPF. Open cell will fill all cavities and if necessary can easily be cut flush with the wall stud or between ceiling rafters.
Closed Cell SPF is the best insulating product we offer. It is a dense 2 pound foam. (2 pound means a cube of foam 12″x12″x12″ weighs 2 pounds.) When cured it is a dense product, it is impermeable to both air and moisture. The R-value is approx. R-6.8 per inch. In the short term it is an expensive option in the long term it is the best decision you can make. In recent studies CC SPF decreased a homes energy consumption by 40 to 50 % better than standard insulating products.
